A Glimpse Into History
The Bright Angel Corridor, one of the canyon’s most iconic trails, has been a pathway for exploration and discovery for centuries. Initially used by Native American tribes like the Havasupai, this corridor later became a gateway for early explorers and settlers seeking to navigate the canyon’s rugged terrain. Today, it serves as a popular hiking route, guiding visitors down into the depths of the canyon where they can witness layers of history etched into the rock walls. This is the route we take guests on during our Rim-to-Rim backpacking adventures!
Just above the trail lies Grand Canyon Village, a bustling hub that began as a modest settlement in the late 1800s. The arrival of the Santa Fe Railway in 1901 brought visitors from around the world, eager to experience the wonder of the canyon. Over time, the village grew into a center of activity, featuring historic buildings like the El Tovar Hotel and Hopi House, which still stand today as testaments to the canyon’s cultural and architectural heritage.
Nearby, to the east, the Grand Canyon Visitor Center serves as a modern gateway for learning and exploration. Here, guests can find exhibits, maps, and interactive displays that enhance their understanding of the canyon’s geology, ecology, and history. It’s a place where visitors of all ages can marvel at the canyon’s grandeur while preparing for their journey along its trails and viewpoints. It’s also a place where many of our daily tours begin, as guests meet their Canyon Ministries guide at the flagpole just outside the Visitor Center before beginning their adventure that day.
Evidence of the Flood
As awe-inspiring as these locations are, the Grand Canyon tells an even greater story—one of God’s power and the global Flood in Noah’s day. The canyon’s fossils, dramatic rock layers, and erosion patterns provide compelling evidence of a catastrophic event, far beyond what slow processes over millions of years could achieve.
On our tours, and especially on Grand Canyon river trips, we explore how the canyon’s geology aligns with the biblical account of the Flood. The towering sedimentary layers, some of which extend across continents, point to rapid deposition by massive amounts of water. Features like the flat boundaries between rock layers suggest minimal time between their formation, contrary to the idea of gradual buildup over eons.
The Bright Angel Corridor, visible on your 3D print, cuts through these layers, offering a glimpse into this rapid process. For instance, the Tapeats Sandstone, found at the canyon’s base, appears to have been laid down quickly by fast-moving, sediment-laden waters, as indicated by the numerous rounded rocks and boulders found within it. Above it, the alternating layers of limestone, shale, and other sandstone reflect shifting water conditions consistent with a year-long catastrophic global Flood event as described in the book of Genesis.

Carving of the Canyon
After the Flood, and perhaps near the end of the Ice Age, the Grand Canyon was carved through the sedimentary layers deposited during the Flood. In the centuries following the global Flood, massive lakes, such as Grand Lake and Hopi Lake, formed and were trapped on the elevated, bowl-shaped Colorado Plateau, held back by natural dams of rock and sediment. Over time, one of these dams breached, sending vast torrents of water spilling out of the plateau.
This breach triggered a catastrophic process of erosion, as the unleashed waters carved through layers of sediment with incredible force. The rapid, runaway erosion widened and deepened the channels, forming the Grand Canyon in a matter of weeks or months—not millions of years. Today, the canyon stands as a striking testament to the power of water and the geological aftereffects of the Flood described in Genesis.
