Foundation Inspection
When was the last time you crawled around under your house and checked out the foundation? Are you certain there are no cracks, weak points, or vulnerable conditions? What level of impact could your home withstand? It is widely agreeable that the foundation of our home is the most important detail determining the integrity of the structure. This truth motivates us to inspect the foundation of any structure we seek to purchase. The initial investigation is rightly focused upon the condition of the supporting framework of earth, stone, cement, and wood. Moving forward in the purchase process is dependent upon the quality of materials, construction, and maintenance of the foundation. Unfortunately, 10 years later we haven’t looked at the foundation since the initial inspection.
Here are some generally true statements about foundations.
Foundations are:
1) Unseen without extra effort
2) Taken for granted; forgotten
3) Unattended to
4) Considered unrelated to the beauty of the structure
5) In need of regular attention to ensure its integrity and strength.
Ignoring the foundation of a structure can render the most beautiful of buildings utterly condemned. The same is true of our lives as well. The foundation of our lives requires careful consideration and regular maintenance. Why do I do the things that I do? Why do I believe the things that I believe? What do I consider to be true about where I came from, why I am here, and where I am going? These are not simply philosophical quandaries and vain intellectual pursuits. The answers to these questions have daily impact and practical implications. Our enemy does not care about how beautiful our lives look. He has come to rob, kill, steal, and destroy. He will accomplish this by attacking the condition of our heart and mind. He fires away at the foundation of our existence. A careful investigation of Genesis provides the understanding and encouragement we need to be certain of the integrity of our foundation. God has provided His eye-witness account of the beginning. Take the effort and time to be certain that we have placed our feet on the solid rock.
“For all that is in the world – the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and the pride of life – is not from the Father but is from the world. And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.” 1 John 2:16-17
“Everyone who comes to me and hears my words and does them, I will show you what he is like: he is like a man building a house, who dug deep and laid the foundation on the rock. And when the flood arose, the stream broke against that house and could not shake it, because it had been well built.” Luke 6:47-48
