The limestone of the Giza Plateau is filled with unmistakable marine fossils—nummulites, shells, and other sea life—visible in the bedrock and even in the blocks of the Great Pyramid of Giza itself. By examining these fossils and the sedimentary features of the plateau, we trace how the stone was formed under widespread marine conditions before being quarried and shaped by ancient Egyptians.
