Living A Bucket List Life
Living a bucket list life isn’t about waiting until we’re facing mortality to start living, it’s about embracing the gift of life we have right now.
Have you ever noticed how some people seem to approach life with an insatiable appetite for adventure? They’re the ones whose social media feeds are filled with breathtaking vistas, whose stories leave you wondering, “How do they find time for all of that?” Well, I’ve been pondering this lately, and I’ve come to realize something profound—living a bucket list life isn’t about checking off boxes; it’s about approaching each day with intentional wonder.
You see, we often treat our bucket lists like some distant dream, a collection of “someday” adventures we’ll get to when the time is right. But here’s the truth that’s been stirring in my heart lately—tomorrow isn’t guaranteed, and today is the only moment we can truly grasp.
Think about it. When was the last time you looked at your surroundings with the same awe you reserve for those “bucket list destinations”? Whether you’re standing at the rim of the Grand Canyon or in your own backyard, there’s wonder to be found if we just train our eyes to see it.
I’m reminded of something I’ve witnessed countless times while guiding tours—the transformation that happens when someone sees the Grand Canyon for the first time. Their eyes widen, their breath catches, and for a moment, they’re completely present in that experience. That’s what living a bucket list life is really about—not just collecting experiences, but being fully present in each moment.
But here’s where many of us get it wrong. We think living a bucket list life requires endless resources, perfect timing, or complete freedom from responsibilities. The truth is, it’s more about perspective than circumstances. It’s about finding the extraordinary in the ordinary, about turning everyday afternoons into adventures, and about recognizing that each sunrise brings new opportunities for wonder.
So how do we start living this way? Here are a few thoughts that have shaped my approach:
Start Where You Are. You don’t need to travel across the world to begin living your bucket list life. What’s in your own backyard? What local adventures have you been putting off? Begin there.
Make Room for Wonder. Sometimes the most meaningful experiences aren’t the ones we plan. Leave space in your life for spontaneity, for following that dirt road you’ve always wondered about, for saying yes to unexpected invitations.
Share the Journey. Life’s greatest adventures are better when shared. Whether it’s with family, friends, or strangers who become friends along the way, don’t keep your bucket list adventures to yourself.
Document the Journey, Live the Moment. While it’s wonderful to capture memories, remember to experience life beyond the lens. Some moments are meant to be lived rather than recorded.
Let God Guide Your Steps. I’ve found the most meaningful adventures often come from bringing God along on the journey. By that, I mean use the time to walk and talk with Him, to say a prayer and invite Him to show you something meaningful along the way. Sometimes the best items on our bucket list are the ones we never planned—they’re gifts from above.
You know what fascinates me? The word “bucket” in “bucket list” comes from the phrase “kick the bucket”—a rather morbid origin for such a life-affirming concept. But perhaps that’s exactly the point. Living a bucket list life isn’t about waiting until we’re facing mortality to start living, it’s about embracing the gift of life we have right now.
I’ve seen it time and time again in the canyon—people arrive with their cameras ready and their bucket lists in hand, but they leave with something far more valuable: a new perspective on life itself. They realize that the real adventure isn’t just in the grand vistas and dramatic landscapes, but in the quiet moments of wonder, the unexpected discoveries, and the connections made along the way.
So here’s my challenge to you: Stop waiting for the perfect moment to start living your bucket list life. Begin today. Look around you with fresh eyes. What adventures are waiting right where you are? What dreams have you been putting off? What wonder might you discover if you just took that first step?
Remember, living a bucket list life isn’t about racing to complete a checklist—it’s about approaching each day with intention, wonder, and gratitude. It’s about recognizing that every moment we’re given is an opportunity for adventure, growth, and amazement.
Let’s go.
