Satisfied by God
We share Psalm 104 as often as we can, with as many people as we can.
“Bless the Lord, O my soul! O Lord my God, you are very great! You are clothed with splendor and majesty, covering yourself with light as with a garment, stretching out the heavens like a tent. He lays the beams of his chambers on the waters; He makes the clouds his chariot; He rides on the wings of the wind; He makes his messengers winds, his ministers a flaming fire. He set the earth on its foundations, so that it should never be moved. You covered it with the deep as with a garment; the waters stood above the mountains. At your rebuke they fled; at the sound of your thunder they took to flight. The mountains rose, the valleys sank down to the place that you appointed for them. You set a boundary that they may not pass, so that they might not again cover the earth. You make springs gush forth in the valleys; they flow between the hills; they give drink to every beast of the field; the wild donkeys quench their thirst. Beside them the birds of the heavens dwell; they sing among the branches. From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.” Psalm 104:1-13
There is much to consider in this passage. I ask you to dedicate today to considering (meditating upon) the final sentence.
“From your lofty abode you water the mountains; the earth is satisfied with the fruit of your work.”
We know and experience God to be the One who provides and satisfies. David is celebrating this fact in stunning imagery. Mountains are considered massive in scale, immovable, and nigh unconquerable. Yet David expresses the magnitude of God’s sovereignty by placing the mighty mountains in a position of dependence upon God’s provision. David moves deeper into the sovereignty of God by proclaiming the earth finds it satisfaction in the fruit of God’s work.
Am I satisfied with the fruit that the work of God bears?
Is His work of creation, judgment, atonement, and redemption enough for me?
Does His word satisfy?
One definition of satisfy is “to give full contentment to.” David is making a powerful statement. It’s a statement we need to be able to repeat with the deepest of sincerity. David is saying that he needs nothing more than the work of God to understand himself and the world around him. David is fully content with what he sees and understands to be the fruit of God’s work. He is not left lacking, thereby having no need to go searching for additional answers or deeper purpose in life. Many people in the church today cannot make a similar claim. There are many who are not satisfied with the fruit of God’s work in creation. They feel they need to elicit additional time and forces to make it work. There are those who are not satisfied in the fruit of God’s work in redemption. They chase the approval of man and of God by the doing of “good” works. Somehow they have fallen prey to the idea their salvation is tied to their performance. A strong percentage of people in the church today still find their identity in their work, possessions, vacations, and hobbies rather than in who God designed them to be. They are not satisfied with the fruit of God’s work as it pertains to their self-worth.
God said He created all things in six days. Are you satisfied with the fruit of His work? God said He judged the earth of sin and caused a great flood to cover the entire earth, subsequently destroying all that had the breath of life in it. Are you satisfied with the fruit of God’s work? God said He made you in His image to bring glory to Him and to share in His joy. Are you satisfied in the fruit of His work? God said He made full atonement for sin and defeated death by rising from the grave. Are you satisfied with the fruit of God’s work?
Our world cries out in harmony with the words of David. The fruit of God’s work truly satisfies. I am not left longing for anything when I accept the word and work of God. God is enough!
Praiseallujiah!
