“Set-up” Man
God has used sports to teach me many things about myself, others, the world around me, and (most importantly) kingdom work. One significant lesson came through my role on my high school football team.
I was a receiver on the offensive side of the ball. I was good enough at that position to contribute to the team’s success. My role within the offense was as a “set up” man. I would make catches to get us down the field, but my best friend got most of the touchdowns. My efforts set up my best friend and my team for success. I was never discouraged by the fact that somebody else was getting the reward for something to which I had contributed. I was stoked for my friend and the team.
I am grateful God placed me in that role from the very beginning. He has continued to use me in such a role often over the years. In fact, it has become a treasured thrill. My greatest rush of adrenaline comes when I see the effort on my part has contributed to creating the environment for someone else to thrive. It is my God-given expectation and joy to serve in a way that makes others successful. This is the foundation from which my life serves the kingdom, my wife, my kids, the Canyon Ministries board and guides, and the church. This is also reflected in how Canyon Ministries serves you.
God has given us a unique (and thrilling) classroom and set of tools to contribute to your abundant living. Every one of our rim tours and river trips is engineered in a way to directly impact the depth of your love for God and His Word. We do not exist for ourselves, but for you. What we do, what we say, and how we say it are all about bringing God glory by setting you up for success as a disciple of Christ.
