The Importance of the Beginning
The beginning of a matter is significant to the whole. Where one begins greatly influences where one ends. In the movie, “Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade”, Indiana was required to find the perceived location of the holy grail. His father had done copious amounts of research dedicated to the discovery of the grail; the cup of Christ. He had journaled his research entirely within one book. His research included a very detailed map that gave the precise location of the grail and explicit directions to get there. However, the map was entirely useless to anybody because it was missing one important fact…where to begin. Without an accurate beginning, the remaining details were a struggle to follow and comprehend.
The same is true for us. What we determine as truth about our beginnings colors the rest of the details of our life. God understood this and faithfully provided His eyewitness account of our beginnings. He chose His servant Moses to record them for us so that even thousands of years later we retain a reliable account of earth’s history; including the history of man. Jesus used this as a witness for the truth of who He is. He appealed to the words of Moses as He spoke to the Jewish religious leaders in John 5.
“Do not think that I shall accuse you to the Father; there is only one who accuses you – Moses, in whom you trust. For if you believed Moses, you would believe Me; for he wrote about Me. But if you do not believe his writings, how will you believe My words?” John 5:45-47 NKJV
Do not underestimate the significance of our beginnings. They are the foundation of who we are. God saw it good to record for us what He did on our behalf. This includes the first presentation of the Gospel in Genesis 3:15. God has been for us since the beginning and He continues to be today.
